12-13-00 FANGORIA's WEEKEND OF HORRORS

Well, it seems that Fango has moved their New York convention from the usual January date back to April 7-8, 2001.  It will still be held at the New Yorker Hotel.  The scheduled guests are as follows (keep in mind, guests are 'tenative'):
Bruce Campbell, Danielle Harris, Joeseph Stefano, Kane Hodder, Tom Atkins, David DeCoteau, Rob Zombie (there to preview his movie HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES with members of the cast) Gunnar Hansen.  Also, other major talent from SOUL SURVIVORS and THE MUMMY RETURNS will be announced shortly.

They also state the at dates from both an LA show as well as a Chicago show will be posted shortly.  I personally hope the Chicago show would happen, but I'm not getting my hopes too high.

12-11-00  FRANCO AND NASCHY TOGETHER
According to the report on the Mark of Naschy website, Jesus Franco reported that his remake of his own 1961 film THE AWFULL DR. ORLOFF, is scheduled to start filming in March of next year. Paul Naschy will be taking on the leading role of the demented doctor. Also starring in the film will be Caroline Munro and Lina Romay. The plot will follow the original, but with a surprise.

The film will be a Spanish-British-US co-production.

12-6-00  Misc. News and Stuff
If you're looking for some cool websites to check out, here's a couple.  The first one is the official site for Argento's latest film, I CAN'T SLEEP.  Even though it's in Italian, it's still a really cool site.

http://www.nonhosonno.it/

And this one is the official site for THE SHADOW OF THE VAMPIRE.

Speaking of Nosferatu, next January, a newly re-mastered and re-scored version of NOSFERATU will be released.  It will have quite a few extras as well.  This is one DVD that should be in any fans collection.

11-23-00  CHRISTOPHER LEE SPEAKS ABOUT ACKERMAN!!!

I got this entertaining little bit of news from DVD DRIVE-IN, which I found very amusing.  On the DVD for HORROR HOTEL, there is some hidden footage of Lee making a few comments, one about Famous Monsters creator Forrest Ackerman.  Lee says: "he's a weird guy, he really is. Not an unpleasant man, but he's STRANGE. He came to see me in London and signed a visitor's book: 'Forrest J. Ackerman - Horrorwood, Karloffornia!!!," as Lee shakes his head in disbelief.

11-19-00 LETTERS TO THE KRYPT:

We recently received this email from Greg Wells.  Greg was lucky enough to have a bit part in the film DEATH DREAM when he was 8 years old.  Here's what he had to say about being in the film:

"I was in 3rd grade. My best friend's parents were actors in Winter Park, Florida. His mother ran the theater part of a summer camp at Rollins College and I was in her drama class at day camp. Her agent asked her to get a couple of kids to audition for the movie and she brought me along. I was totally psyched about getting to be in a movie. I was on set for one day. I remember two things vividly about the movie. One was all the crap food and soda I could eat and drink (probably ate 5 or 6 of those nasty hostess pies. hey, I was 8 or so). The other was when they had to make the dog look like it was growling at Andy. In order to make the dog look like he was growling, they took a rubber band, hooked it around his eye teeth and ran it over the top of his snout. then they pulled his lips up so it looked like he was snarling. Then Richard Bachus held the dog with his thumb and pinky under his front legs and the other fingers around its neck and shook it so it would look like he was choking the dog. We were actually in front of the camera for less than an hour. I had something to say, but I have no memory of what it was.
I do vaguely remember the director, Bob Clark (tho I didn't remember his name), being nice to us. So was Richard Bachus. Kinda found it strange this was listed as a Canadian movie, since at least our part was filmed within an hour or so from Orlando.
I really wanted to see it as a kid. It was rated R (I think), and my Mom was busy the first weekend it came out. We were going to go see it the second weekend, but it didn't make it to the second weekend. About 20 years ago I got a residual check (heh, I think it was $20) from Channel 5 in Washington, DC because they were going to show it. Also kinda strange 'cause I had moved back to DC by then. I watched the TV Guide for months, but I never saw it listed.
This movie launched my distinguished commercial acting career for a couple of years. Free Spirit Bicycles, Pizza Hut, Stars Hall of Fame, and my big national break, New York Life Insurance (where I got to yell "I wanna go to college!" when my commercial Dad scored a touchdown. <sarcasm off>  Anyway, tons of fun for an 8 year old."

11-4-00  MORE MISC NEWS!
After rumors about WES CRAVEN'S DRACULA 2000 going straight to video / DVD, it looks like it will be going to the theaters as originally planned on December 22nd.

According to Variety, the psychological thriller SPIDER will be the next film by David Cronenberg.  It stars Ralph Fiennes who is an outpatient from an asylum who is trying to piece back together his past.  Miranda Richardson is to co-star.

DVD Review listed a couple of new titles set to be released on DVD.
HYSTERICAL - This is the horror spoof by the Hudson Brothers, which parodies such movies as DRACULA, THE AMITYVILLE HORROR, THE EXORCIST and many more.  This was always a very hard video to find.  It stars Murray Hamilton, Bud Cort, Cindy Pickett, Richard Kiel, Julie Newmar and Charlie Callas.
TWITCH OF THE DEATH NERVE (a.k.a. BAY OF BLOOD, CARNAGE) - Yet another classic from Mario Bava coming to DVD.  This film must of inspired some of the FRIDAY THE 13th films.  After the Countess Frederica is killed by her husband, who then is killed himself by someone else.  Many different people are killed many different ways.  Not one to miss.

Jon Bon Jovi has signed to play the lead role in the sequel to JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES.  What character he will be playing is not known.  The sequel is to be produced by Sandy King with Carpenter being the executive producer, with Tommy Lee Wallace directing from a script that he wrote.  I got to admit that I don't know about that casting.  Time will tell.

Also according to Variety, Lions Gate Films has picked up the U.S. rights for the first four films by Fantastic Factory, from producers Brian Yuzna and Julio Fernandez.  The films are Yuzna's FAUST, Jack Sholder's ARACHNID, Stuart Gordon's DAGON (which should start filming shortly) and BEYOND RE-ANIMATOR (no details on this one yet).  It hasn't been determined as to whether they will be going straight to video or if they will get a theatrical release.  Let's hope for the theaters.

DARKNESS, the next film by Spanish director Jaume Balaguero, has been picked up by Dimension.  The movie will be shot in English and will start filming next year in Spain.  As part of the deal, Dimension also got the U.S. rights to Balaguero's THE NAMELESS, which was based on a novel by Ramsey Campbell.

10-22-00  MISC. NEWS & INFO

Chuck Parello's film ED GEIN won the award for best film at the Sitges International Film Festival of Catalonia.  Steve Railsback, who plays the title character also won the award for best actor as well.
Geoffrey Wright won the best director award for his film CHERRY FALLS.

Tonight on Showtime, they will be playing the film POSSESSED.  This is the movie that tells the true life story of the 1949 exorcism that happened in St. Louis.  This is what gave William Peter Blatty the idea for his book THE EXORCIST.  The film stars Timothy Dalton, Christopher Plummer, Piper Laurie, and Jonathan Malen.

(Thanks to Dr. Casey)

According to Debra Hill, HALLOWEEN will be getting a re-release in the theaters, just as THE EXORCIST did.  Let's just hope they don't screw with that one.

(Thanks to Gorezone)

10-19-00  MORE DVD TITLES OUT THIS MONTH FROM ANCHOR BAY!

THE STUFF - The killer ice cream movie of the century!  Starring Michael Moriarty, Paul Sorvino, Danny Aiello, and Garrett Morris.  The DVD is in widescreen format (1.85:1) and has an audio commentary by director Larry Cohen, along with the original theatrical trailer.
SLUGS - One of the best killer bug movies out there.  Based on the best selling novel by British horror author Shaun Hutson, and directed by J.P. Simon, who brought us PIECES.  The DVD is in widescreen format (1.85:1), and includes the original theatrical trailer.
Both DVDs are price at $24.98, and should be available on 10-24-00.

9-20-00  SATAN GOES TO THE MOVIES!!!

I'm sure everybody has heard that on September 22nd, the new version of THE EXORCIST will be re-released in the theaters.  Imagine my surprise when I caught the headlines of the Tuesday edition of the Chicago Sun-Times:

"ARCHDIOCESE GETS EXORCIST"

According to the story, "For the first time in it's 160-year history, the Archdiocese of Chicago has appointed a full-time exorcist.  The article goes on to explain what they do and that the number of possessions has gone up over the last decade.
Then they mentioned the little news bit about an impromptu exorcism that Pope John Paul II had to carry out on a 19-year old Italian girl early this month.  Apparently, it only had a temporary effect on the girl.
Okay folks, here's my take on the whole matter.  With the re-release of THE EXORCIST coming out, this is great publicity.  My guess is that Warner Brothers made a call to the Catholic Church HQ and offered a big fat "donation" to the church, if they start getting this whole exorcist thing in the news.  Next thing you know, the Pope is doing a surprise exorcist, and now the Chicago gets their own exorcist.  Now before the movie was going to be coming out, there was never really any news of any possessions or anything.  Now, according to Rev. James LeBar, an exorcist for the Archdiocese of New York, there has been a "large explosion" of exorcisms over the last decade, with New York having 300 in the last decade.  Is it just me, or does this just not sound right.

VCI has recently announced they will be releasing Mario Bava's THE WHIP AND THE BODY!  For those who have not seen this film, it's one of my favorite Bava films.  They will also be releasing Bava's BLOOD AND BLACK LACE as well.  Both DVD's will have extras like audio commentaries, still galleries, and much more.

MGM has announced (finally) that early next year, they will be releasing both THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES and DR. PHIBES RETURNS on DVD!!!

Apparently, Tobe Hooper's latest, CROCODILE didn't do that well.  It's already hitting DVD / video this December.  It does have a bunch of extras, such as audio commentary, making of documentary, deleted scenes, and more.
(Thanks to DVD NIGHTMARE)

According to Variety, there will be a sequel to JOHN CARPENTER'S VAMPIRES.  This sequel will be directed by Tommy Lee Wallace, who wrote the script, while Carpenter will be executive producer.  The title right now is being called John Carpenter Presents VAMPIRES: LOS MUERTOS.  The only returning character from the first film will be Father Adam, who will be once again played by Tim Guinee.
I don't know about his one folks.  It doesn't sound good, but Wallace has come across in the past with some great flicks.  Maybe he can do it again.
(Thanks to DR. CASEY)

For some Halloween TV news, there are two documentaries coming out next month that you may want to mark on your calendars.  The documentary on independent horror films by Adam Simon, called THE AMERICAN NIGHTMARE, will be making it's cable debut on Friday, October 13th, on the Independent Film Channel.  This could be pretty interesting.

Also on cable in October, is the original new Turner Classic Movies documentary on silent film star Lon Chaney, called LON CHANEY: A THOUSAND FACES.  The documentary is hosted by Kenneth Branagh.  This should be really good.  TCM will also be showing several of Chaney's films.  It will be shown on October 24th.

9-11-00  SCREENWRITER CURT SIODMAK DIES!
According to the Los Angeles Times, writer and director Siodmak passed away back on September 2, in California.  Fans of the Universal horrors will be very familiar with Siodmak, being that he wrote THE WOLFMAN.  He also had his hands in such films as I WALKED WITH A ZOMBIE, CURUCU: BEAST OF THE AMAZON, EARTH VS THE FLYING SAUCERS, plus many more.  He was even a successful author, with his best know novel being DONOVAN'S BRAIN.  He was 98 years old.
(Thanks to DR. CASEY)

Also, for fans of Lon Chaney Sr., mark your calendars for October 24th.  They will be premiering their new original documentary on the great Chaney, entitled LON CHANEY: A THOUSAND FACES.  After the show, they will also be showing his films TELL IT TO THE MARINES, THE ACE OF HEARTS, THE UNHOLY THREE, and WEST OF ZANZIBAR.  The following week, on Halloween night, we will be replaying the documentary, along with some of the Chaney classics.  This should be one not to be missed.

9-2-00  FINALLY SOME NEWS!

Next week will see the release of THE OMEN DVD box set.  This is a must for us horror fans.  While I haven't seen the second and third one in quite some time, the first one remains as classic among the genre.

Plus, according to an interview with John Landis over at DVD Review, he was asked about any plans for a Special Edition of his American Werewolf In London.  Apparently, Universal in the UK is getting some stuff together for it.  Hopefully they will remaster the print, as well as have some really cool extras.

According to Anchor Bay's site, THE WICKER MAN DVD will have a 50 minute featurette, which will have interviews with Christopher Lee, Edward Woodward, and other members of the cast and crew.  More extras to be announced later.

Anchor will also be releasing NATTEVAGTEN (aka NIGHTWATCH), Ole Bornedal's excellent dark thriller (the original, not the lame-ass remake), which will also feature commentary by the director.

We've recently seen the new Spanish film, THE NAMELESS, which is based on a novel by Ramsey Campbell.  This is another film that has shows some great talent from a first time director.  While it does seem to have a lot of influences from SEVEN, and maybe even JACOB'S LADDER, but still does give a real impact once watched.  Look for a full review of the film shortly in our Review section.

And also, while not really a horror film, we've recently got the newly released Ultimate Edition DVD of TERMINATOR 2: JUDGMENT DAY.  It is amazing.  Even though I've seen the film countless times, it looks and sounds incredible.  Plus there are tons of extra supplementary material.
But folks, here's a couple of notes about the three versions of the film that it has.  The DVD and packaging make no mention or reference to the Extended Special Edition that was suppose to have an extra 5 minutes that have never been seen before.  You need a special code for it.  To do this, go to DVD Nightmare, to their review of the dvd and they will tell you what to do.  Secondly, this extra footage is really only about 3 minutes, and is the footage of Sarah and John Connor grown up, playing in a playground with John's daughter, showing that they had change the future.  This segment was shown during one of the documentaries that I had seen.  But none the less, the DVD is still well worth the cost.

8-18-00  MISC. MOVIE NEWS

It's official!  Director Stephen Norrington and writer David Goyer have signed on to do the GHOST RIDER film.  Both had worked together on the first BLADE movie.  Goyer describes the movie "As a kind of turbo-charged gothic/horror/western movie. Kind of like a cross between Road Warrior, Vanishing Point, Badlands and The Hitcher."  It will have a budget somewhere around $75 million.
(Thanks to Dr. Casey)

ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is finally hitting DVD from MGM.  The good news is that it will contain a new anamorphic 2.35:1 widescreen transfer as well as a Dolby Digital Surround Sound format.  The bad news is that the only extra the DVD will have is the theatrical trailer!  From what I've heard, MGM couldn't make a deal to get the audio commentary that was on the laserdisc.  Plus, why couldn't they get the uncut footage that Carpenter was always talking about and that they show part of on the laserdisc?  What a crock.

8-16-00  ROMERO TO APPEAR AT THE CINEMA WASTELAND CON????

There are rumors about that Romero may be showing up at the Cinema Wasteland convention next month in Ohio.  Romero has stated on his website's message board, "I'll do my best to be there."
This will be the ultimate show for fans of DAWN OF THE DEAD.  Here's some of the DAWN cast who is already scheduled to be there: Dave Emge (Flyboy), Ken Foree (Peter), Scott Reiniger (Roger), and Tom Savini.  As well as James Baffico, Tony Buba, David Early, Leonard Lies, Jim Krut, Bob Michelucci, and Marty Schiff.
PLUS, Tom Sullivan, who was the makeup effects guy on the first EVIL DEAD film.  This is his first convention appearance.  Also is cult director Ted Mikels, who made such classics as ASTRO-ZOMBIES, THE DOLL SQUAD, BLOOD ORGY OF THE SHE DEVILS, and of course THE CORPSE GRINDERS.
Plus many more.  For more info, click here.

8-15-00  MORE MISC. NEWS

According to Daily Variety, production for TREMORS 3: BACK TO PERFECTION will begin in October.  Michael Gross will be returning in his role of the survivalist Brent Gummer to battle the graboids.  Brent Maddock will be directing.  He was the co-writer of the first two films.

Director Stephen Norrington, (DEATH MACHINE, BLADE) might be directing the live action version of the Marvel's comic book character GHOST RIDER.  David S. Goyer, who wrote the screenplay for BLADE, is working on the screenplay.  Their looking at budget around $75 million.  With the success of THE X-MEN, we are going to be seeing a lot more of these live action comic book adaptations.

According to reports at the Fangoria's Weekend of Horrors convention last weekend, the SEED OF CHUCKY sequel is dead.  Screenwriter Don Mancini told the crowd that Universal was a little embarrassed that BRIDE OF CHUCKY made so much money.  I'm actually surprised that being that it did make so much money that they weren't lining up 2 or 3 sequels.  Isn't that what Hollywood does?

And last but not least, according to The Hollywood Reporter, Kevin Williamson will return to the horror genre with an adult oriented serial killer film that he will be writing and producing for Dimension films, called CURSED.  I thought they would of learned their lesson with THE FACULTY and TEACHING MRS. TINGLE.  Guess not.

8-12-00  MISC. NEWS

Apparently Pinhead is going straight to DVD / Video this October.  HELLRAISER: INFERNO will be released on DVD on October 10th.  This newest entry was directed by Scott Derrickson, and stars Craig Sheffer and Nicholas Turturro, with of course Doug Bradley as Pinhead.
This story is about a bad LA cop who finds the puzzle box, opens it, and releases Pinhead.  All those around him start to die, he sets out to destroy Pinhead and escape from the Hell he's in.
The DVD features a 16x9 Enhanced transfer in the movie's original 1.78:1 aspect ratio, as well as a Dolby 5.1 sound track.  The DVD will also have a Featurette called SECRETS OF PINHEAD REVEALED, as well as a conversation with Bradley.
This doesn't look good folks, when the first news about this film is the straight to video / DVD release announcement.  Of course, could it be any worse than the last two entries?

Paramount has announced another two entries in the FRIDAY THE 13th series to hit DVD.
FRIDAY THE 13th: PART 3 will be released on October 17th, in a 16x9 - 2.35:1 ratio.  It does come with trailer, but unfortunately won't be in 3-D.  The retail price will be $29.99.
FRIDAY THE 13th PART 4 will also be released on the same day, but will only be in 1.85:1 ratio.  This also only comes with a trailer, and has the same retail price.

But also coming out from Paramount is a special edition of ROSEMARY'S BABY.  The excellent tale of witches from Roman Polanski will be in 16x9 - 1.66:1 format and have some cool extras, such as a Making of documentary, and interviews with Polanski, producer Robert Evans and production designer Richard Sylbert.
This will also have a retail price of $29.99, and will be released October 3rd.

And for a few other news tidbits:
Bill Paxton will be making his directing debut on a horror film.  The film is called FRAILTY, and is about a single father of two boys, and may or may not have the power to identify demons.  He sets out to kill the evil people.  One of his sons sees him as a hero while the other sees him as a killer.
For a while there, I had figured Paxton had forgotten what genre his roots were in.

According to Daily Variety, Edward Furlong will be reprising his role as John Connor in the upcoming TERMINATOR 3.

In other casting news, it looks like cult faves Sid Haig and Karen Black have leading roles in Rob Zombies HOUSE OF 1000 CORPSES.  I sure hope this turns out to be a good movie.

7-29-00  DVD ANNOUNCEMENTS AND MORE!

Also, Image will be releasing the excellent early sci-fi / horror flick THE CRAWLING EYE in December.  If you're not familiar with this film, check out our reviews section.

And last but not least, George Romero's site, is now somewhat open.  For right now, there only seems to be something the news section.  But he says that it will also be having a message board, Q&A section, a store, and even a chat room, where Romero himself will be participating in.  In the news section, Romero discusses what has been going on with his career in the last few years.  With his tales of Hollywood, it's enough to make a someone with dreams of becoming a filmmaker change his mind real quick.

7-23-00  COURTNEY LOVE OFF CARPENTER'S MARS FILM

Apparently due to an ankle injury, Love will not be in the new Carpenter film, THE GHOSTS OF MARS.  According to Variety.com, due to the tight budget, they can't wait for her ankle to heal, and will be looking for a replacement.  Love injured her foot while going through the training for the physical demands of her role.

John Carpenter, Debra Hill and Kurt Russell are looking to bring Snake Plissken to the small screen for a new tv series. The series will follow the further adventures of Snake. Kurt will not be playing the role, just as co-producer. If the series does well, a third movie might be maid, with the title currently ESCAPE FROM EARTH. Sorry folks, but these both sound like abortions waiting to happen.
Thanks to Fangoria

According to DVD Maniacs, ROSEMARY'S BABY, THE DEAD ZONE, and PET SEMATARY will be released on DVD this September.  All the titles will be 1.85:1 anamorphic widescreen versions, with the first two titles having a new 5.1 mixes.  ROSEMARY'S BABY will include new interviews with the cast and crew.  That should be a very cool disc.

FRIDAY THE 13th Pt 3 & 4 are also coming out on DVD.  Unfortunately, part 3 will not be in 3-D, but will be in 2.35:1 widescreen.  Part 4 will be in 1.85:1.  They will both be released in October.

7-12-00  MISC. NEWS!
Yea, I know it's been a while for a News update.  Other than DVD releases and announcements, there hasn't been a great deal of news as of late.  But here are a few items for you:
There are no plans for another DVD release of Peter Jackson's THE FRIGHTENERS.  The special edition laserdisc has a huge documentary, as well as about 12 minutes of extra footage.  The DVD release of it was just the original theatrical versions.  Fans of this movie (including me) have been hoping for a new DVD release, but it looks like it ain't gonna happen.
MGM are currently working on a DVD release for Joe Dante's THE HOWLING for sometime next year.  No info yet on whether it will have any extras or not.
MGM is also stating that they own the rights for RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD and do not have it listed on any DVD release schedules.
On October of this year, MGM will be releasing John Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK on DVD.  It will contain a commentary and a making of documentary.  Hopefully it will have the same commentary that was on the laserdisc, with Carpenter and Kurt Russell, which is very entertaining.
THANKS TO DVD NIGHTMARE

6-21-00  ARNOLD TO DO TERMINATOR 3 - PLUS MORE BIG NEWS

According to Variety.com, Arnold Schwarzenegger has signed on to star in TERMINATOR 3.  They're aiming for a late spring of next year.  No word on who's directed.  Cameron has stated before that he has no intention of revisiting the property again.

GEORGE ROMERO COMES TO CHICAGO!

Romero will be appearing at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago at the end of July.  The Institute will be screening a few of Romero's films.  The films to be shown are:
NIGHT OF THE LIVING DEAD
JACK'S WIFE
THE CRAZIES
MONKEY SHINES
They will also be previewing his latest film BRUISER
Romero will at the screenings of MONKEY SHINES and BRUISER.  For more details click here.
(THANKS TO DVD MANIACS)

It also looks like there will be a third film in the TREMORS series.  It will have the original scriptors and producers, but no details yet on the cast.

According to Fangoria, Italian director Pupi (THE ARCANE ENCHANTER) Avati is deep into production on his latest film, THE KNIGHTS OF THE QUEST. While the title clearly positions it as a period adventure, our source tells us that the movie also involves "black magic, exorcism and demon possession."

And as I'm sure most have already heard or read this, but Anchor Bay Entertainment has announced they will be releasing Dario Argento's SUSPIRIA on DVD sometime next year. It will be in it's original uncut form and featuring a widescreen transfer (2.35:1). No details as any extras yet, but they are expecting something close to what was on DEEP RED and INFERNO.

6-18-00  NEW MARIANO BAINO FLICK!
Baino is currently working on his long awaited follow up project since his first feature DARK WATERS (aka DEAD WATERS). His newest film, entitled RITUAL, based on the 1988 novel by Graham Masterton, is being filmed in Lost Angeles. Louise Salter, who was the lead in DARK WATERS, is once again playing the lead. Also starring is Doug Bradley.

Also, Jess Franco might be remaking his own 1962 film AWFUL DR. ORLOFF. Eurocine, the producers of the first version, are going to do the remake as well. There's even talk of Udo Kier playing the title role.

6-12-00  NIGHTMARE BEFORE CHRISTMAS SPECIAL EDITION DVD!!!

Finally coming this October to DVD, Tim Burton's NIGHTMARE will be hitting DVD again.  But this time it will be the Special Edition version.  This version will contain extras such as the making of documentary, audio commentary with Burton, deleted scenes, production stills, and Burton's FRANKENWEENIE and his awesome short film VINCENT.  I'm guessing it's the same stuff on the laserdisc box set, which used to retail for $80-$90.  So for only a third of that, you can have it all on DVD.

6-9-00  PHILLIPINO HORRORS!

According to DVD DRIVE-IN, Sam Sherman of Independent International Films, said that he will be putting out DVD's of six films that were made in the Phillipinos.  Such as the Blood Island films: BRIDES OF BLOOD, MAD DOCTOR OF BLOOD ISLAND, and BEAST OF BLOOD.  Along with CURSE OF THE VAMPIRES, THE BLOOD DRINKERS, and even Al Adamson's BRAIN OF BLOOD.  This is some great news.

But wait, there's more!  Sherman also said that through Image Entertainment, they will be releasing John Gilling's masterpiece THE FLESH AND THE FIENDS (aka MANIA), which stars Peter Cushing and Donald Pleasance.  This is the best version (in my opinion) of the tale of Burke & Hare and Doctor Knox.  This is one incredible film.

Also, Image Entertainment has also announced a series of DVD's on the careers of different film directors, simply called DIRECTORS.  The first title that was announced was DIRECTORS: DAVID CRONENBERG, which should be released in September.  Another genre director listed is DIRECTORS: WES CRAVEN, which will also be released in September.

6-3-00  WRITER / DIRECTOR ERIC RED INVOLVED IN CAR CRASH.
Eric Red is known in the horror genre for writing such classic films as THE HITCHER and NEAR DARK.  According to Variety.com, two men have died after Red ran his vehicle into a crowded pool hall near the UCLA campus on Wednesday.  Red remained in critical condition after trying to cut his own throat after the crash.
Red had been working with Artisan on his first picture in five years, a thriller called TEACHER'S PET.

6-2-00   DVD TITLES FROM IMAGE ENTERTAINMENT
BLACK SABBATH - Mario Bava's classic anthology, starring Boris Karloff.  This dvd will feature the uncut version.  It will be in Italian, with English subtitles.  It will include a filmography, production info and stills, trailer, and even some deleted footage.
    CAVE OF THE LIVING DEAD
CRUCIBLE OF TERROR - Mike Raven stars as a mad sculptor.
FEMALE VAMPIRE - Jess Franco's awesome vampire tale, starring his wife Lina Romay, and also with Jack Taylor.  This is listed with a running time of 110 minutes, and is in 2.35:1 ratio.  It will also have a trailer, and alternate footage from the horror-only version of the film, EROTIKILL.
FRANKENSTEIN'S DAUGHTER - Starring John Ashley, and the dvd will include production stills.
GRUESOME TWOSOME (Special Edition) - Another classic from H.G. Lewis.  This dvd will feature audio commentary by Lewis, the Herschell Gordon Lewis Gallery of Exploitation Art, trailer, and the archival short subject: "Wig-O-Rama"
HOUSE OF SEVEN CORPSES - John Caradine classic.
MY SON THE VAMPIRE - Really a comedy but features Bela Lugosi and was directed by John Gilling.
OLIVER TWIST - For the Lon Chaney Sr. fans out there.  This silent film has Chaney playing Fagin to Jackie Coogan's Oliver.  Also as an added bonus, the DVD will feature the short film THE LIGHT OF FAITH, starring Lon Chaney.

6-1-00  EVEN MORE NEWS!!!
The release date for JASON X has been moved back a year until next April!  Why am I mentioning this?  Since for a (very) short time, I actually thought this could be a pretty cool movie.  But after hearing that David Cronenberg was going to have a bit part and says "I basically play a stupid doctor who deserves to die.", it sounded just like all the other idiot slasher films out there.  And now that they're moving it back a whole year, that usually doesn't mean a good thing.  Of course, that's just my little opinion.

Speaking of stupid movies, even after the God-awful sequel WISHMASTER 2, it seems they want to beat a dead horse even more so and make 2 more sequels.  At least Andew Divoff has gotten some dignity and won't be in them.

Universal is putting more of the classic horrors out this fall. They include CREATURE FROM THE BLACK LAGOON, ABBOTT & COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN, THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA (CLaude Rains), and THE INVISIBLE MAN. Most of them will have extras like commentary, production notes, stills, and a documentary.

Francis Lederer passes away on Thursday, May 25th, of natural causes. Most horror fans will know him from his role as a vampire in the 1958 film RETURN OF DRACULA.

And the best news, as to what sounds like the possibility of a great movie, French director Christophe Gans new film is called THE BROTHERHOOD OF THE WOLF.  Gans directed the awesome action film CRYING FREEMAN (which still has yet to be released over here in the States), which is filled with some great atmosphere and style.  He also directed on the episodes in the Lovecraft anthology film NECRONOMICON.
His latest is based  "18th century legend of a mysterious beast that left a trail of mutilated victims and spread terror among the peasants in southeast France" (source: The Hollywood Reporter, 2/7/00).  King Louis XV sends a young detective to investigate the strange murders in the south of France.  Shades of SLEEPY HOLLOW???
The film had a budget of $30 million, which would make it one of the most expensive French productions of the year.
Let's just hope that it's as good as Gans previous work.

5-26-00  NEWS! NEWS! NEWS!

Apparently after the success of George Clooney's live TV movie FAIL SAFE, he's decided on doing another one.  Clooney will now produce a live TV version of THE THING, based on the original short story "Who Goes There?" by John W. Campbell.  It'll be interesting on how they do it.  Obviously, it won't have the special effects that John Carpenter had in his version, but it still will be interesting.

Also, from some of the early reports that I've heard / read, Anchor Bay's CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD does not have the quality one would of expected.  You may want to wait before picking this one up folks, or getting rid of the EC laserdiscs if you were lucky enough to pick one up.  I know I'm glad I didn't drop mine on eBay once the DVD announcement came out.

5-20-00  DVD NEWS (yet again!)

For fans of Cameron's TERMINATOR 2: JUDGEMENT DAY, you will be getting one hell of a Special Edition coming out soon.  Just to name a few details, but it will include 3 different versions of the movie (one that will have an additional 5 minutes of footage never seen before), audio commentary with 26 cast & crew members, 2 or 3 different "making of" documentaries, the entire screenplay, over 700 storyboards, and much more.  This is going to be one amazing dvd.
For more details, check out DVD NIGHTMARE.

Also, the upcoming dvd release of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2 will be the 100 minute director's cut of the film.

5-14-00  HAMMER DVDs COMING THIS MONTH!

On the 23rd of this month, THE FOUR SIDED TRIANGLE, QUATERMASS 2, and THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN will be out on DVD.
THE FOUR SIDED TRIANGLE is presented in full-frame and includes the World of Hammer episode THE CURSE OF FRANKENSTEIN.
QUATERMASS 2 is also presented in full-frame, has audio commentary by director Val Guest and writer Nigel Kneale.  It will also include the World of Hammer episode SCI-FI, and a U.S. theatrical trailer of ENEMY FROM SPACE (the American title).
THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN is presented widescreen (2.35:1) and includes audio commentary by director Val Guest and writer Nigel Kneale, a theatrical trailer, as well as the World of Hammer episode PETER CUSHING.

5-11-00  Tons of News From Anchor Bay Entertainment

Along with audio commentary tracks, the upcoming special editions of HELLRAISER and HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2 will also have new featurettes.

Anchor Bay is trying to reconstruct the most complete print of the classic film THE WICKER MAN from several sources from around the world.  Additional supplements are already in the making, including featurettes and commentary tracks.

The three ILSA films have been pushed back from June to July.  Maybe they don't have the full uncut prints after all?  Wouldn't be the first time.

Fulci's HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY is scheduled for release in January of next year.

Ruggero Deodato's CUT AND RUN is now scheduled for sometime next year.  They say they're still trying to 'secure' the longest version of the film.  That's funny, since when they announced the film, it sounded as if they already had the uncut print.

Anchor has also announced they will be releasing Lamberto Bava's directorial debut, MACABRO, as well as Albert De Martino's THE ANTICHRIST, one of the better EXORCIST spin-offs.

I wouldn't be dumping any laserdiscs or old pre-records just yet folks.  I'll be waiting till they get released and made sure are the complete versions.

5-8-00  THE BEYOND DVD FINALLY ANNOUNCE & MORE!

After years and years of waiting, Grindhouse has finally announced officially that THE BEYOND and CANNIBAL FEROX will be released on DVD.  CANNIBAL is scheduled for June 13th, while THE BEYOND is set for September 19th.  Here's more details on what they will have:

Italian, US and German trailers

Liner notes by the infamous Chas Balun

Also, in other DVD news, it looks like there will be a special edition of THE CROW.  This Collector's Edition will have commentary, along with the alternate cut of the movie which includes the Skull Cowboy (played by Michael Berryman) sequences.  This should be one hell of a DVD.  It'll be very interesting to see this footage, as well as hear the commentary about the film.

Thanks to DVD REVIEW for the info.

ARGENTO CASTING NEWS and MORE!

Max Von Sydow is confirmed to have the lead role in Argento's next film, I CAN'T SLEEP.  Shooting is to start in a couple of weeks.  Thanks to the great Argento website DARK DREAMS OF DARIO ARGENTO for the info.

Also, in other movie news, apparently the supposedly gruesome ending to the book HANNIBAL is being changed for the film version.  The new ending is suppose to be in the same feeling as the original ending.  Thomas Harris, author of both the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS and HANNIBAL novels has approved of the new ending.  Of course, I'm sure that has nothing to do with the $10 million dollar check he got for the film rights.  With Ridley Scott directing, I'm sure it's going to be pretty damn good.  Let's keep our hopes up.

DVD NEWS!
Richard Donner has finished the audio commentary for the new THE OMEN DVD.  There will be a making of documentary as well.

The newer versions of HELLRAISER and HELLBOUND: HELLRAISER 2 will have audio commentary by both Clive Barker and Ashley Laurence.  Director Tony Randel will be on HELLBOUND as well.

5-1-00  NEW DRACULA FILM
This is to be a modern retelling of Stoker's famous novel.  Christopher Plummer has been announced to play the Dracula's nemesis Van Helsing.  The other main roles have not yet been cast.
Wes Craven is producing the film, while Patrick Lussier, who was the editor of Craven's SCREAM TRILOGY, MUSIC OF THE HEART, and also of HALLOWEEN H20, will be taking the directorial chair.
Let's just hope that while editing H2K and those SCREAM films, he knows just what a bad movie looks like.

Craven will not SCREAM again!

Wes Craven has recently spoken out about the chances of him doing another entry in the serious.

"Consider this the final word.  I have no intention or making Scream 4.
I have several projects that will keep me occupied for the next couple of years. While the Scream films have been a wonderful experience, I have other projects to pursue. I certainly appreciate the loyalty of the Scream fans and their enthusiasm for the films, but I think that we've done what we had set out to do.
I would also appreciate it if you would squelch the rumor that I am accepting Scream 4 scripts. We have been inundated with amateur writers that are saying that they heard this was true."

The only bad thing (yes, I did say bad thing) is that just because Craven isn't going to do it, doesn't mean somebody else won't.  Trust me.  There will be a SCREAM 4.  God help us all.

FRANCO'S DR. ORLOF COMING TO DVD

Image Entertainment will be releasing Jess Franco's THE AWFUL DR. ORLOF on DVD this July.  This 1962 black and white film is very different from the later films that Franco made.  This was is actually very chilling and atmospheric.  This is one of those classics that should be in everyone's collection.
The DVD apparently doesn't have any extras.

4-29-00  VAMPIRE LOVERS UNCUT!
Since acquiring the Orion Pictures library, MGM Technical Services have been compiling the inventories they had gotten.  It seems that the first film that is going under restoration is the 1970 Hammer film VAMPIRE LOVERS.  After years of rumors of different cuts, it looks like this film will not only be released uncut for the first time, but will be the best quality transfer yet, since it will coming right off the original negative.
The cuts that are being restored are the extra gore in the decapitation of the vampire in the very beginning of the film.  Also there are several cuts restored at the end of the film, with Peter Cushing putting an end to the vampire, played by Ingrid Pitt.  There is an extensive staking sequence as well as the decapitation, including Cushing  holding the dripping disembodied head.
There were also rumors of some more nudity during the bath sequence.  This was not on the prints that were found.  Also not found were some shots of the vampiric Kate O'Mara biting into a breast.  These maybe just that, rumors.
In any case, this is some great news for horror fans, especially fans of the Hammer Films.  There is no mention of when the release date is expected, or if will be released on video and DVD, or just video.  I'm sure it will be released on both.

4-27-00  MORE MOVIES!

JAWS will be coming to DVD on July 11th.  This Special Edition DVD will feature tons of extra cool stuff.  It will have a 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer, outtakes, deleted scenes, a new "Shark World" educational video on sharks, storyboards, a photo gallery with advertising materials and production photos, and a trivia game, along with trailer, production notes and cast and crew biographies.  The only bad thing is that the two hour documentary that was on the laserdisc is going to be cut in half to fit on a one sided disc.  What a crock!

MGM ANNOUNCES A FEW MORE TITLES FOR VIDEO RELEASE!

Coming soon to (only) video from MGM are the following:
VAMPIRE LOVERS, RETURN OF COUNT YORGA, SCREAM AND SCREAM AGAIN, and THE INCREDIBLE MELTING MAN.  Still no reason for no DVD releases.  Probably after everybody buys the videos, then they'll put it out.  Who knows.

4-21-00  DVD NEWS from MGM

MGM has announced a few interesting titles that should be coming out this fall.
THE FOG, THE HOWLING, MISERY, PUMPKINHEAD, SCANNERS, TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE 2, TERMINATOR: Special Edition, ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK: Special Edition.

4-17-00  DVD NEWS and MORE!

Anchor Bay has released some info about a few upcoming DVD releases that might interests us horror fans.
ANGUISH (1986) - Zelda Rubinstein and Michael Lerner star in this bizarre tale by the controversial Spanish writere / director Bigas Luna.  Released in 2.35:1, with 5.1 Dolby Digital, and comes with trailer.
BLOOD SPATTERED BRIDE (1972) - Vicente Aranda's tale of reincarnation and lesbian, based on the Le Fanu's CARMILA.  The film has been restored from the original negative materials and is presented uncut and uncensored.  There's been rumors for years about the missing heart removal footage, which I think is just that - rumors.  But we'll see what Anchor Bay comes up with.  This will be released in 1.85:1, English dubbed, mono, and comes with a trailer.
CANNIBAL MAN (1974) Eloy de la Iglesia tale about a man who becomes a cannibalistic murderer.  Released uncut and uncensored, in 1.85:1, English dubbed, mono, and comes with a trailer.

FOR LUCIO FULCI FANS!
CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD (1980) - Released as GATES OF HELL, this will be (hopefully) the definitive version of this Fulci classic.  Comes with trailers, cast / crew biographies, in 1.85:1, 5.1 Dolby Digital.
DON'T TORTURE A DUCKLING (1972) - While not as gory as some of his more famous films, this Fulci film is one of the most disturbing.  This re-discovered classic has been restored from the original vault materials and is presented completely uncut and uncensored.  Presented in 2.35:1, English dubbed, in mono, and comes with cast & crew bios.

The release dates for all above DVD titles is May 23rd.

HAMMER NEWS???
I keep seeing news about Anchor Bay getting the rights to Hammer's SCARS OF DRACULA, LUST FOR A VAMPIRE, and DR. JEKYLL & SISTER HYDE.  But I've checked out their site, including their upcoming release dates and can't find any mention of them.

GARY OLDMAN MEETS HANNIBAL

There's a possibility that Gary Oldman will be in the SILENCE OF THE LAMBS sequel, HANNIBAL.  If so, he will be playing one of Lector's patience that is seeking revenge on him.  It should be a pretty intense film with both Oldman and Hopkins in it.  Let's all hope.

4-7-00  THE FLY DVD
A source to David Cronenberg is saying that he will be doing an audio commentary for the DVD release of his 1985 remake of THE FLY.  Hopefully it will have some cool extras.

Also coming to DVD, Eddie Romero's take on the ISLAND OF DR. MOREAU, TWILIGHT PEOPLE.  This is a great movie for those who haven't seen it.  Of course, you really need to be a fan of Romero's work.

4-5-00  MORE ANCHOR BAY DVD NEWS & MORE

Here's some more titles announced recently:
The Day the Earth Caught Fire
Emmanuelle In America
Garden of Allah
House
House II: The Second Story
Link
The Many Faces of Christopher Lee

4-1-00  EVEN MORE DVD NEWS!

Anchor Bay has acquired the rights to Albert Pyun's THE SWORD AND THE SORCERER and will be coming to DVD Spring of next year.  Starring Lee Horsley, Richard Lynch, and Richard Moll, the film will be presented in its original aspect ratio with other extras to be announced later.  While some may not consider this horror news, any film where you have demons who can rip someone's heart out from across the room, or somebody ripping his own head in half, I'd consider that pretty damn close.
Also, for some bad news.  Anchor Bay have pulled the Argento's OPERA from their production schedule until they can finishing negotiations with the rightholders.

From Image Entertainment comes even more exciting news.  They will soon be releasing Mario Bava's HATCHET FOR THE HONEYMOON.  It will be widescreen (1.66:1), with production info by Tim Lucas, Production Stills, Mario Bava Biographies, and Director Filmography.
Also coming in June of this year, the notorious CANNIBAL FEROX Special Edition.  This DVD will be in widescreen (1.85:1), with audio commentary by director Umberto Lenzi and star John Morghen, trailer, production stills, filmography, on-camera interview with Lenzi, and some other surprises as well.
They have also announced the Amicus anthology film ASYLUM to be released on DVD this June.  Unfortunately, it will be Full Frame.  But with this all-star cast, such as Peter Cushing, Herbert Lom, Britt Ekland, Patrick Magee, and being directed by Roy     Ward Baker, this is a must have title.
And for some other slightly non-horror news, Image will also be releasing a double feature DVD of two of Lon Chaney Sr.'s films, OUTSIDE THE LAW (directed by Tod Browning) and SHADOWS.  As mentioned, this aren't horror films, but it's always nice to see one of the true masters of the silver screen work his magic.  Both films will feature new film scores and the release date is set for late June of this year.

3-30-00  MORE DVD TITLES FROM ANCHOR BAY!

VAMPYRES - Spanish director Jose Larraz's famous erotic vampire movie.  The film has been digitally mastered and will contain audio commentary by Larraz and producer Brian Smedley-Aston, along with talent bios, still gallery, and trailers.
POSSESSION - Available for the first time in the US in it's original uncut version.  The originally US release had about 45 minutes cut from it.  This DVD will have audio commentary by director Andrzej Zulawski and biographer Dan Bird.
THE VAMPIRE HAPPENING - Freddie Francis' horror / comedy about a girl traveling to Transylvania to sell the family castle, but unknowingly unleashes her horny vampire ancestors.
    Release date: May 9th.

3-28-00  THE HAMMER FILM MUSIC COLLECTION Vol. 2 - CHEAP!
If you are a fan of Hammer films and enjoy the music from the films, you might know about the collection of scores put out by GDI Records in Englund.  A couple of years ago, released Volume 1, which features 25 tracks from many different Hammer films.  Well, they've released Volume 2.  Now most places are charging around $30 for each cd.  But I've recently found that you can order them from CDNOW.COM at a considerably lower price.  They list it for around $24, plus if you use one of the coupons (see main page for details) for $10 off, it makes it even more of one hell of a buy.

3-15-00  Guillermo del Toro to direct "Blade 2: Blood Hunt

According to Variety.com, New Line Cinema will be having Guillermo del Toro direct the sequel to their very successful film BLADE.  The sequel will have both Wesley Snipes and Kris Kristofferson returning for the sequel.  They are aiming for a summer of 2001 release.
The sequel has been written by David Goyer, one of the writers of the first film.
For those who are not familiar with del Toro's work should check out his first two films, MIMIC and the excellent CRONOS.

DVD NEWS:
Anchor Bay's release of Hammer's THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN will be a 2.35:1 anamorphic transfer, and will include a commentary track by director Val Guest and writer Nigel Kneale.  It will also include the WORLD OF HAMMER episode "Peter Cushing", as well as a trailer.  QUATERMASS 2 will also feature a commentary by Guest, Kneale, and Marcus Hearn, the co-author of THE HAMMER STORY.  Both will be released on April 11th.

3-5-00  EVEN MORE DVD NEWS!

Two separate double-feature DVD's for THE FLY movies on double sided disc. The first one will have the original THE FLY and RETURN OF THE FLY and then the second disc will have Cronenberg's remake of THE FLY along with THE FLY 2. All will be anamorphic, but any extras have yet to be announced.

Carpenter's BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is suppose to get a Special Edition treatment sometime early next year. Also in production from MGM are Carpenter's ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK and THE FOG.

Other titles from MGM include MISERY, Brian DePalma's BLOW OUT and DRESSED TO KILL. Plus there will be a special edition of THE TERMINATOR.

TERMINATOR 2 is getting special edition treatment from Artisan. This should be out by late summer, and will have tons of extras.

Also this summer should be the 25th Anniversary edition of JAWS. This is suppose to have same supplementary stuff from the laserdisc, but it's not confirmed if it'll have everything or an edited version.
(Thanks to DVD NIGHTMARE)

2-22-00  MORE DVD NEWS!

Fox plans to release the first three OMEN movies on DVD within a year.  THE OMEN will be getting the Special Edition treatment, which will tentatively have a new 16x9 transfer, 4 deleted scenes, and an audio commentary by director Richard Donner.

Also announced for DVD is THE HIDDEN and THE FLY.  As to what extras might be on these is not known at this time.

2-18-00  DVD NEWS!
Warner will be releasing a new re-mastered version of INTERVIEW WITH THE VAMPIRE.  Included on the new DVD will be a Featurette, a audio commentary, intro from the director, a still gallery and a trailer. The release date is set for early June.

Fans of Jess Franco will have something to cheer about soon.  Elite Entertainment will be releasing JACK THE RIPPER.  Synapse will be putting out SHE KILLED IN ECSTASY in June..  Anchor Bay will be releasing ILSA: THE WICKED WARDEN in June.  Image will supposedly be releasing AWFUL DR. ORLOFF, SADISTIC BARON VON KLAUS, DR. JEKYLL'S MISTRESSES, A VIRGIN AMONG THE LIVING DEAD, FEMALE VAMPIRE, DEMONIC, OASIS OF THE ZOMBIES and REVENGE OF THE HOUSE OF USHER.  Franco on DVD.  What a wonderful world.

SLEEPY HOLLOW COMING TO DVD!!!  Probably one of the best movies that I've seen in a long time has been announced for release on dvd coming this May.  The DVD will have tons of extras (YEESSS!), such as commentary track, deleted scenes, and more.  Will post more details when we get them.
(Thanks to DVD NIGHTMARE)

2-15-00  BLAIR WITCH NOMINATED FOR WORST FILM OF 1999!

The Golden Raspberry Foundation nominated THE BLAIR WITCH PROJECT, along with BIG DADDY, THE HAUNTING, WILD WILD WEST, and STAR WARS: EPISODE 1 - THE PHANTOM MENACE, for the worst movies of last year.  It's nice to know that there were a few people more than I originally thought that didn't jump on the band wagon and realized just how bad this film really was.  Maybe there is still hope.

Also, Anchor Bay Entertainment announced some more titles they've acquired:

    THE BEING
    CAT O'NINE TAILS
    GOODBYE, EMMANUELLE
    PARASITE

They also SHOCK will be released on March 21st.  CITY OF THE LIVING DEAD & POSSESSION will be released on May 23rd.  They are planning to have THE BEYOND out by October.  HOUSE BY THE CEMETERY has been delayed with no release date given.  This is not a good sign folks.

2-13-00  UNCUT EXORCIST TO HIT THEATERS!  Apparently, the are re-issuing the uncut version of THE EXORCIST to the theaters.  This is suppose to have the 10 minutes of extra footage that was cut from the original release.  While this isn't a bad thing, after seeing the extra footage on the special edition DVD, I can see why and agree with director William Friedkin on why he cut those scenes, especially the infamous "spider walking scene".
Maybe there just trying to us to buy yet another version on DVD.

2-7-00  KARLOFF'S DAUGHTER SUES UNIVERSAL

Sara Karloff is suing Universal Studios for $10 million in damages, claiming the company used a bait-and-switch scheme to avoid paying her royalties for the use of some classic Karloff characters: Frankenstein's Monster and Ardath Bey and Imhotep from THE MUMMY.
Sara Karloff is saying that after negotiating a royalty agreement with her for the use of the Boris Karloff characters in advertising and promotions, Universal decided to avoid paying the royalties by tweaking the Karloff characters just enough to create a generic Frankenstein's Monster and Imhotep that looked confusingly similar to, but not precisely the same as the Karloff characters.
(As reported by Variety.com)

HAMMER FILMS UNDER NEW OWNERSHIP

On Monday, January 31st, Hammer Film Productions Limited was acquired by a private investment consortium.  This consortium brings together a group of media and entertainment entrepreneurs.
According to the press releases, "The recapitalised and reinvigorated company plans to make an early return to film and television production and to build Hammer into the leading horror brand in all media, including the internet distribution and e-commerce.
"Hammer is the strongest name in horror", says new chairman Larry Christfield.  "We have brought together an exceptional group of individuals who believe that in a fast-growing but volatile business such as entertainment, a strong brand in a perennially popular genre has enormous potential."
Let's all hope that they continue the tradition and not ruin it.  I have my fingers crossed.

2-1-00  NO NEWS AND SOME REAL NEWS

I try to keep this section updated with some interesting news bits here and there.  But you might of noticed a lack of info about certain subjects here at the Krypt.  There are reasons for that.
For instance, there's the news bite about SCREAM 3, and that Wes Craven is not going to do anymore.  And also that even the cast doesn't know who the killer is this time.  Who gives a shit?  Not me.
Example 2.  Kane Hodder will not be playing Jason in the Freddy vs Jason movie.  Once again, who really cares?
And lastly, while looking on the Clive Barker Official site, they made mentioned about the upcoming BOOKS OF BLOOD anthology movie.  In the New Info section, it states:
"Three first time gay directors / writers have been hired to adapt PIG BLOOD BLUES, HUMAN REMAINS, and DREAD for this BOOKS OF BLOOD anthology picture."
Is there a reason that they are pointing out the fact that these directors are gay?  What does that have to do with the price of tea in China?  I've liked most of Barker's film work.  Hell, I'm one of the few that think NIGHTBREED is an awesome movie!  But why do we need to bring their sexual tastes into the filmmaking process?  It seems they are trying to make more of a political statement than anything else.

NOW FOR SOME REAL NEWS!!!
Anchor Bay Entertainment will be release 4 more of their Hammer Collection on DVD on March 21st.  The titles include QUATERMASS 2, THE ABOMINABLE SNOWMAN OF THE HIMALAYAS, X - THE UNKNOWN, and THE FOUR SIDE TRIANGLE.  These are some of Hammer's earlier films, but are all worth getting.  QUATERMASS 2 is exceptionally good, with a INVASION OF THE BODY SNATCHER theme to it.  I strongly suggest checking these out.

1-28-00  While browsing through a mailer I received today about upcoming DVD's, Elite Entertainment has quite a few more cool titles up their sleeve.

  • HOUSE OF SORORITY ROW

  • LADY FRANKENSTEIN

1-24-00  According to reports, Joel Schumacher and Warner Brothers are developing a female version of the 1987 film LOST BOYS.  Whether it will be a remake, sequel or just re-hash of that theme is not stated.  Schumacher will be producing while someone else will be directing.  I wouldn't get my hopes up too high for this one.  I still want to see the original story for LOST BOYS, being a vampire take on the PETER PAN story, as it was originally suppose to be.  Never heard of that?  Let me know and I'll fill you in.

1-21-00  FANGORIA's WEEKEND OF HORRORS / CREATION SUCKS! - We survived another Fango show, especially the trip.  Let's just say it's a long drive from the Chicago are to the Big Apple.  The shows line-up pretty much sucked, except for Udo Kier.  Unfortunately, since I was watching my table most the time, I didn't get the chance to hear Udo talk but for a few minutes.  I did get a chance to get some photos (none of which turned out!!!) and did get an autograph.  But there really wasn't that much else to draw.  Even the number of dealers seemed to be smaller than normal.  With the last two shows Fango did in New York pretty damn good, what happened?
But the biggest event of the weekend, was Creation proving once again just how screwed up they are.  It seems they try screw up more with each show.  We had left early for the trip so we would get there in plenty of time for set up on Friday night.  We made it in plenty of time, even a couple hours to spare.  But once set-up time roles around, no one from Creation is there.  Then when one of their minion does shows up he's surprised that no one else from Creation is here.  But instead of trying to solve the problem, he just stands there and says "Oh this is bad," in between the times he's talking about his Star Trek collection being the second largest in the world.  He even makes the comment that he's been doing shows for 20 years.  My reply was that you'd think after 20 years they could get their shit together.  Apparently not.
So, as usual, Creation screws up again.  I just don't get it.  Each year, Creation pisses off more dealers who decide it's not worth doing anymore.  And when you combine that with the fact that Fango can't keep getting decent guests, it's not easy to see why their shows are going in the toilet.
