We tried like hell to avoid doing Dave Hagen’s first Monster Mania convention. One reason was that it was a week before our annual trip to Ohio for the Cinema Wasteland show, and figured two shows in two weeks might be a little tough. Plus, we had already made one trip this year out to the East coast in August for the Horrorfind Weekend. We try to only do one long-distance-show a year.
But Dave kept adding more and more guests to bait me out there. Yes, I do think that was Dave’s only reason for booking those guests…to get me out there. And if you’re curious, the sky is also blue in my world. But seriously, for being a first time show, Dave came through with one hell of a guest line up. And when he added Hazel Court, we decided that we had to make the trip. And even with a few ‘first show bumps’, I think it turned out to be a great show.
Being a die-hard Hammer fan, it was great seeing many stars of the studio that dripped blood over the weekend. And the tribute to Peter Cushing with Caroline Munro, Yvonne Monluar, Veronica Carlson, and Hazel Court (hosted by Joe Bob Briggs) was very interesting hearing these actresses’ tell their stories of working with him. There was also Suzanna Leigh greeting her fans, who was in LUST FOR A VAMPIRE and the highly underrated THE LOST CONTINENT. We had a nice conversation about her working with Klaus Kinski.
Another highlight of the show for me was meeting 2/3’s of the demented brothers who brought us KILLER KLOWNS FROM OUTER SPACE, Charles and Stephen Chiodo. They were on hand with tons of original sketches, designs, and storyboards from this great little classic. But these guys have also worked on some other great films, including being the team behind developing and creating the title characters from the CRITTERS movies. They were selling prints of a rare poster for KILLER KLOWNS that was really cool. Of course, we had to pick one of those up. They both told some great stories about working not only KLOWNS but CRITTERS and other films that they had worked on.
Other guests that were there were Betsy Palmer and Kane Hodder, Julie Adams and Ben Chapman, Doug Bradley, and many more.
While we didn’t do that great at our table, and didn't get to float around the dealer's room as much as I would have liked, I still had a great time, and that’s really what it comes down to it. I know that Dave is already planning next year’s show, so we’ll have to see…
